Zack Snyder Defends Casting Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor

57th Annual BFI London Film Festival - "The Double" Premiere - Arrivals

Director Zack Snyder has defended his potentially disastrous casting decision which will see lovable nerd Jesse Eisenberg play the role of Lex Luthor in ‘Man of Steel’. The superhero film will also feature Henry Cavill as Superman and Snyder says that fans shouldn’t judge his casting decision without knowing the way the story plays out and the type of character they’ve molded in the Lex Luthor image. A petition has already been signed by hundreds to have the role passed to someone else. Snyder said:

“We know the material. Unfortunately, the fans don’t know the material. So, we’re casting according to what’s happening in the script… I understand the canon. I’m not crazy. I know what these characters need from a mythological standpoint.”

Snyder believes the actor is perfectly capable of taking on the role and points out that he’s even been nominated for an Oscar in the past:

“I think Jesse is going to be an amazing Lex. Let’s not forget he was nominated for an Academy Award (for The Social Network). It’s not like I just grabbed my friend to play the guy! This guy’s the real deal.”

He adds that people are simply haters:

“Some people are hating to hate… Just stop it!”
