Zac Efron Is Praised By Tom Hanks For ‘Courageous Decision’ To Seek Help For Alleged Addiction

Zac Efron has been praised by Tom Hanks on his “courageous step” to seek treatment for his alleged addiction troubles, following reports he checked himself into a rehab facility in April.

The former ‘High School Musical’ star reportedly secretly underwent several weeks of treatment for drug abuse and now Tom Hanks has sent the star some words of encouragement, despite admitting that he didn’t know much about the young actor’s alleged struggle.

“I’m not hip about [Efron’s exact situation],” he told E! News during the press conference for his new film ‘Captain Phillips’ before adding, “but I think anybody who says, ‘Hey, maybe I should go work on this,’ more power [to him].”

Marcia Gay Harden, who stars alongside Zac in ‘Parklife’ echoed Tom Hanks’ statement at the HBO Emmy’s party where she said she believes the 25-year-old “is a total hero.”

She commented: “Him seeking help encourages other people with addictive issues to seek help. It’s brave of him.”

Zac broke his silence for the first time last week following his rehab revelation, by posting a picture to Instagram from a recent trip with his dad to Peru in which he thanked his fans for their “support these past few weeks.”

The picture which sees the star crouching in front of ancient ruins, was posted with the caption : “Hey guys! Just returned from an incredible trip to Peru with my dad and wanted to thank you all for your support these past few weeks…means the world to me. Love you guys! ”

It’s thought the star has stayed clean since his reported rehab visit, as a source told E! News: “He’s healthy, happy and not drinking, he’s taking time to focus on working.”
