What Does Sony’s Netflix Deal Mean for Cinema?
Sony Pictures have managed to ink a very substantial deal with Netflix so that they can expand their reach. They started with the slate for next year and the films from Sony companies happened to include Picture Classics, Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems and, of course, Tristar pictures. All of them are going to be streamed on Netflix after the theatrical release. This is going to last for around 10 months. After the run on Netflix, the titles are going to then go to another group of platforms. This includes ABC, Hulu, Freeform and more. Both the deals with Netflix are going to run for a five-year term and this is going to coincide with the new releases coming out.
The Rise of Netflix
Of course, Netflix have become a giant in the industry, and it would seem that they have also helped to take a lot of the attention away from cinemas. Cinemas have been increasingly, and understandably, concerned about their own position in the industry, purely because a lot of the movies are going to Netflix first. People love the convenience of being able to watch movies in the comfort of their own home, as opposed to having to go out to the movies, and having access to a huge catalogue to choose from. The same concept can apply to many entertainment industries but the casino industry serves as a notable example, due to the similarity between physical and online services.
Brick and mortar casinos, in the early days of online casinos, had the same worries cinemas are now having. Since then, the online casino industry has ballooned into a multi-billion-dollar force. Many gamers enjoy the option to play popular online casino games via apps or browsers from providers like Casumo for the same reasons audiences enjoy Netflix: accessibility and huge catalogues. What is noticeable, though, is that brick-and-mortar casinos still have significant pull. The experience they offer, while translated by online providers in the form of live casino, is unique to what can be found digitally. It has its traditions which consumers still value, as much as they do online solutions. Cinemas will likely find themselves in the same position.
The deal that has been made is going to include a huge amount of titles from Sony. The landmark multi-year deal is going to show a lot of award-winning action and this is a win-win for fans. They are going to be able to benefit from seeing the best content from some of the most prolific studios in Hollywood.
Movies and Upcoming Releases
A lot of superhero movies are now in development, and they are all going to be set in the same cinematic universe. That being said, they are going to be catered to a more adult audience. In short- this deal is going to really benefit superhero fans and it is going to give them the chance to watch movies and series from various platforms. Of course, this is going to be the case for around five years, and this is especially beneficial for those who have been following the movies that are coming out and want to see how the story develops.
Of course, only time will tell what the future holds, but right now it would seem that there is a lot of potential for the industry when it comes to development. It’s safe to say that there are going to be a lot of deals being made as well, to try and make sure that the platforms are able to collaborate with each other on any future movie releases. This is a fantastic movement to say the least.
