The ‘Dark Knight Rises’ hits cinemas in less than 20 days and to celebrate how tantalisingly close the epic conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy is, Warner Bros have kindly released some more stills of the action just to wet our appetite further.

The final installment of the tense and thrilling action franchise sees Christian Bale slip once more into that tight black suit and fight to save the seemingly doomed Gotham City against Tom Hardy’s masked demented and ruthless terrorist Bane as well as dealing with seductive and mysterious cat burglar in the form of Anne Hathaway.

New stills from the movie show Batman facing Tom Hardy’s Bane with the ‘Dark Knight’ looking as steely cool as ever in his super hero guise. The running time for the third film has also been confirmed at 164 minutes with a 12A rating, meaning the action will keep us on the edge of our seats for almost three hours.

While the impressive trailers promises a feast for movie goers, a newly released synopsis will fill in some of the details that as of yet fans could only have guessed at.

The synopsis reads: “It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive.  Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good.”

“For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda.

“Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile.  But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.”

Hints have already been made that Batman may loose his life in the conclusion of the critically and commercially successful trilogy which sees Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman return to their icon roles.

They line up alongside newcomers Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, Liam Neeson, Anne Hathaway and Marion Cotillard for a star-studded blockbuster.

But will Batman win out? Or will the ‘Dark Knight Rises’ signal the end of the caped crusader?

‘Dark Knight Rises’ hits screens on 20th July 2012.
