Shake Your Money Maker! Madonna Is The Richest Pop Star On The Planet
Thirty years ago she sang about wanting a life of wealth and affluence – but little did Madonna know that she would one day become that Material Girl, after she was today heralded as music’s highest earner.
The 54-year-old has been named the wealthiest pop star of 2012 after she brought home almost £23million ($34.5million) in revenue last year, and that’s mainly thanks to her world tour.
According to Billboard Magazine’s annual Top 40 music rich list, Madonna has dominated her fellow singers and musicians with her earnings, her MDNA tour bringing in an estimated £21million ($32million) – that’s a whopping 90% of her earnings.
However, it’s hardly surprising – ticket prices to see the multi-millionaire perform on her 88-date tour started at £104 ($160) so she was bound to be raking it in!
Madonna also topped the list in 2008, and again, due to tour income, but this year she is the only woman in the Top 10, after pop star Taylor Swift was knocked down to 15th.
Coming in second after Madge, is veteran rocker Bruce Springsteen, whose £22million ($33.4million) income was also mainly generated by touring.
The Born To Run star earned 92% of his revenue through his stadium and arena tour which also saw merchandise sales strongly boost takings.
Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters came in third with earnings of £13.9million (£21million), and, like Madonna and Bruce, most of this came from his The Wall Live tour.
Van Halen were fourth with $20m (£13.2m) after touring in support of their album A Different Kind Of Truth followed by country music veteran Kenny Chesney, the Dave Matthews Band, country stars Tim McGraw and Jason Aldean, and Coldplay came next on the list.
And rounding up the Top Ten is Justin Bieber who earned almost £10.5million ($16 million) last year, £6.5million ($10 million) of that generated from his sold-out ‘Believe’ world tour.
