Scarlett Johansson Hated Her Surprise 21st Birthday Party

Scarlett Johansson has revealed that she hated a surprise party which was thrown to celebrate her 21st birthday. The actress reveals that she is not a fan of surprises in general so she wasn’t pleased when her parents tried to force her to go to a night club where the surprise was waiting for her. She explained:

“I don’t like jokes, I don’t like surprises. I’ve had bad experiences. The last time I had something like that, it was my 21st birthday and I had to get up at 5:30 Am the next day to work. I went out to dinner with my family, we’re driving home and my friend Sarah had a party at a nightclub every Thursday night and my mum said, ‘Oh, you gonna go to your friend’s nightclub? It’s a Thursday night.’ And I said, ‘No way, I gotta get up at 5:30 Am. She was like, ‘You should go, you should go out drinking with your friends!”

Scarlett adds that the situation quickly spiraled out of control and she ended up with a bleeding fingernail after fighting with her parents and refusing to go to the club. She admits she knew that a surprise party was waiting but she finds the attention so embarrassing that she wanted to avoid it:

“We got into this huge fight, which ended with my step-father pushing me out of the car, into a nightclub – I had a bleeding fingernail from it. I knew what awaited me. It was lots of love and presents and I hated it. I hated every minute of it. I just get so embarrassed. It was awful. I went into the party, went straight to the bar – drank like mummy told me to – stayed until 2:00 Am and went to work.”
