Ryan Gosling Explains Why He Laughed so Hard During Oscars Mix-Up

The Oscars mix-up – Warren Beatty mistakenly announcing that La La Land won Best Picture – has gone down in history as one of Hollywood’s biggest fails. This kind of thing only happens in a Bojack Horseman episodes, but nope – it was very real for the cast of La La Land, who were on stage and had to undo the mess as graciously as possible. While most of the cast scrambled to take it in their stride (pretending they weren’t too sad about losing out), Ryan Gosling just stood there giggling. Now, Ryan has explained why it was just so funny:

“What really was happening as I was watching, it was surreal anyway, I was watching people start to have this panicked reaction in the crowd and guys were coming on with headsets and I felt like someone had been hurt. I thought there was some kind of medical situation, and I had this worst case scenario playing out in my head.”

He added that he was actually relieved when the truth came out and he was very pleased for the cast of Moonlight:

“And then I just heard, ‘Oh Moonlight won,’ and I was so relieved that I started laughing. But truthfully, I was also so thrilled that Moonlight won, I know the director…I’ve worked with them before. It’s such a ground breaking film, made for a million dollars, and incredible achievement and I’m so happy for them that they were being recognized.”
