Race To The Top! Fast & Furious Tops US Box Office

Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson can celebrate this weekend after their latest movie Fast & Furious 6 has topped the US box office doubling the performance of Bradley Cooper’s latest Hangover instalment.

The six instalment of the popular Fast & Furious franchise debuted at number one in the North American box office, taking £80.7 million ($122.2 million).

Over the four-day Memorial weekend, the Hangover Part III took £34.3 million ($52 million), which was less than half what Vin Diesel and the gang took.

The movies are so successful that a seventh instalment has been planned and is set to open in the summer of 2014, according to BBC News.

JJ Abrams’ movie Star Trek: Into Darkness is still performing well, taking $48 million last week. Rounding off the top 5, was Epic which took $44 million while Marvel’s Iron Man 3 is still performing well with $24.6 million.

According to Hollywood.com, the top five were: Fast & Furious 6 ($122.2m) The Hangover Part III ($52m) Star Trek: Into Darkness ($48m) Epic ($44m) Iron Man 3 ($24.6m).

It’s been reported that Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Great Gatsby and Iron Man are performing really well and with the estimates it’s been suggested that the US box office could see a record-breaking weekend, making it the biggest Memorial weekend box office ever.

Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for Hollywood.com, has estimated that the four-day weekend could see the performance a good 15% more than 2013.
