Nick Lachey Says He’s Happy He Never Had Kids With Jessica Simpson
It’s been over eight years since Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson ended their made-for-reality-TV marriage, and, now that both singers are happily remarried, neither mentions their ex very often. Nick found himself in the hot seat, however, during an appearance on Jenny McCarthy’s SiriusXM radio program on Tuesday, when he was peppered with questions about his ex-wife Jessica.
Nick is now married to Vanessa Minnillo, who is currently pregnant with the couple’s second child. While Jenny did ask Nick several questions about Vanessa, it seemed like she was intent on getting Nick to talk about Jessica. Nick seemed uncomfortable when Jenny asked him if he regretted not having children with his ex-wife.
“In our situation, that was probably the best thing that could have ever happened that we didn’t have kids,” he said. “You’re always going to love your kids no matter how you feel about their other parent, but all things being equal, it was the best thing probably for both of us that we went on with our lives.”
Nick and Jessica starred on the popular MTV reality show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica for several years before their divorce in 2006. The subject of having children often came up on the show. In fact, several episodes were devoted to Jess and Nick discussing how and when they’d like to start a family. The couple even talked about adopting a child, an idea Jessica seemed to be set on at the time.
Of course, Nick and Jessica never had children, which made it easier for them to move on from each other after the divorce.
“She and I don’t necessarily stay in each other’s lives,” Nick said, adding that he and Jessica don’t have any type of relationship today. “I wouldn’t say it’s friends and I wouldn’t say it’s enemies, there is just no contact. We both moved on with our lives. It’s not animosity, it’s not friendship, it’s just kind of nothing.”
Jessica recently married Eric Johnson, the father of her two children, which makes Nick think that he and Jess weren’t meant to be together forever.
“She’s obviously happily married with two and I’m happily married and about to have two so it all worked out the way it was kind of meant to work out,” he said.
