Mindy Kaling Annoyed by Elle Cover Backlash

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals

Mindy Kaling has opened up on the controversy surrounding her recent Elle cover. Mindy’s cover made headlines for being the only cover of four to appear in black&white which stirred up suggestions that the magazine were trying to hide her skin colour. Her cover was also the closest cropped, with people complaining that they also aimed to cover up her figure. Mindy has opened up on the cover shot, saying that she wasn’t too happy about the backlash because she was actually very proud of what she looked in the new image:

“I was for the first time on the cover of a fashion magazine, which is such an awesome, nice thing, I saw the cover . . . I thought I look so beautiful. I thought, Wow, I’ve never looked better.’ I feel like I look like a movie star on it.”

Mindy added that she found the whole reaction weird because it first implied that her body might be something that a magazine would want to cover up:

“There was a weird reaction which was, ‘Does Elle magazine think Mindy’s not skinny enough to show her whole body like standing up from head to toe? The sort of implication, what they kept saying was like, ‘What Elle, you can’t put her big fat body on the magazine? Why because she’s just fat and gruesome? Why shouldn’t we look at her beautiful fat body?’”

Mindy adds that she found it strange how people were trying to defend her because it was almost an insult:

“And I was like, ‘Okay, people who are trying to defend me,’ I just feel like they’re kind of insulting me!”
