Kanye West on Art: I Would Have “Become Picasso or Greater”

The rapper was recently invited to Oxford University to give a lecture – and of course, it produced some brilliant quotes, which is always what happens when Kanye is given free rein to say whatever he wants. When speaking about approaching art, Kanye says if he had tried fine art, he would have been ever better than Picasso:

“My goal, if I was going to do art, fine art, would have been to become Picasso or greater. That always sounds so funny to people, comparing yourself to someone who has done so much, and that’s a mentality that suppresses humanity.”

His album was great, possibly the greatest album of the last 25 years, but Nicki Minaj did kick his ass:

“Chris Rock & everyone else at every single media publication called My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy the best album of the last 25 years. One of the best thing about the album was Nicki Minaj, and that she kicked my ass, on my own song, on the best album of the last 25 years. I was exiled from my own country, came back with my magnum opus, and I was beat by a girl.”

On the concept of luxury:

“Beauty has been stolen from the people and is being sold back to them as luxury.”

On paying the price:

“Clothing should be like food. There should never be a $5000 sweater. You know what should cost $5000? A car.”
