Jenny Beavan Responds to Not Getting Clapped During Her Oscars Acceptance

Mad Max: Fury Road‘ costume designer Jenny Beavan became one of the most talked about people at this year’s Oscars. In a clip from the ceremony, it appeared that many people weren’t clapping for her when she was announced as winner for Best Costume. Some speculated that it was because Jenny wasn’t typically dressed up in a designer gown and heels for the ceremony – and instead wore a biker jacket to accept the award. Now, Jenny continues to be her awesome self, responding back to not getting clapped:

“I just think I was quite slow. It is so easy to trip, even though I was wearing a sensible pair of boots. I just wanted to take it slowly. And, honestly, I didn’t clap the whole time [during the ceremony] — your hands get tired. We had done a huge amount of clapping by that time. They didn’t have to! I don’t mind in the least if they didn’t clap. I felt really good, I felt the warmth, I was so proud of doing the film for George and it didn’t matter what anyone else thought, really…”

Jenny adds that her biker outfit was a tribute to the winning film and she hopes all of the talk about her only helps to let women see that you don’t have to be supermodel beautiful to be a success:

“I was absolutely doing it as an homage to the film — and I don’t have any sense that anyone in the Academy didn’t appreciate it. I really do think things will all calm down, but the only thing I would like is for my outfit to have a positive effect on what women feel about themselves. You don’t actually have to look like a supermodel to be successful. If that could be a takeaway, I think that would be a good thing.”

In the now viral clip which shows several celebs not clapping as Jenny makes her way to accept the award, director  Alejando Inarritu is seen with his hand folded as if disrespecting the winner. He has since released a statement about the moment:

“By editing and omitting the full reality and suggesting I felt anything but admiration is mean-spirited and false. What you don’t see in the 10 second clip being circulated is my applause for Jenny as she ascended the stairs to the stage. I’ve learned a lot this awards season … that I should never cross my arms when I am sitting down.”
