Fox confirm 15th season of American Idol will be last

We never thought the day would come, but alas American Idol will be no more after its 15th season. Okay, maybe we had an inkling, but Fox have confirmed the show’s farewell in their 2015-16 schedule announcement, where American Idol was notably absent.

Dan Walden and Gary Newman said “It was not an easy decision. It’s been such a vital part of Fox during its run.”

But after 14 years Newman says producers FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment “felt collectively with them the right time for the franchise to close.”

But it’s not all doom and gloom. Fox will be honouring the show with a “true season-long celebration,” according to Newman. “We’re already talking about surprises we can have for the fans to make it feel special and send it off [in a way] that makes it as significant as the run it’s had on our network.”

American Idol burst onto the seen as Fox’s highest-rated show pulling in an average of 30 million viewers during its peak in 2006. Now it’s lucky to bring in half of the audience it enjoy din its hey day.

In 14 seasons, American Idol launched the careers of superstars including Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson, multi-Grammy Award winning Carrie Underwood, Queen front man Adam Lambert and original winner and all around pop sensation Kelly Clarkson, who topped the Billboard Album charts 13 years after being crowned the show’s original winner.

Since the departure of Simon Cowell in 2010, the singing contest has struggled to find its original voice and viewers have been dramatically turned off. Big names Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Jennifer Lopez were brought in to try and revive the show’s original magic, to no avail, and now it’s undoubtedly time to pull the plug. Waldon recently revealed he’s spent some time with Cowell and original judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson, insisting that “there’ a lot of enthusiasm about coming back and paying tribute.”

American Idol continues this Tuesday and Wednesday for its 14th grand final. It will return for the 15th and final season in January.
