Eddie Redmayne Admits He Blew His ‘The Hobbit’ Audition

British actor Eddie Redmayne has revealed that he auditioned for the role of Bilbo Baggins and he blew the audition so badly that Martin Freeman was given the role. It must have been a truly awful audition. Eddie says that when researching the part, he watched some old videos of Ian Holm’s take on the character which he took his inspiration from, but it turned out to be over the top. He commented:

“After the Lord of the Rings they were auditioning for The Hobbit and I was sent an audition for Bilbo Baggins and… I went to this audition and I had been really rigorous about it and didn’t want to do my usual boring thing.”

He says he spent hours watching these old videos of Holm’s performance:

“So I went on Youtube.com and I found Ian Holm, who played him (Baggins) in the Lord of the Rings, and I tried to copy his character. The casting director put on the camcorder and I started reading the scene (in a very animated manner).”

The casting director was immediately unimpressed:

“I thought I was being brave and before the word ‘Baggins’ had come out of my mouth, she (casting director) said, ‘Oh no, no, no! (Do it in your) own voice’. I never got a call back.”
