Ed Sheeran ‘Marries’ Sick Fan After She Proposes To Him With Ring

Just when you think you couldn’t love Ed Sheeran any more he goes and does something truly amazing. The singer has granted a sick fan her ultimate wish by accepting her marriage proposal after she met him backstage at a gig.

Ed was introduced to poorly Katie Papworth, 19, backstage at his show at the Glasgow SSE Hydro on Thursday just before he went on stage. The teenager wore her favourite ‘Mrs Ed Sheeran’ t-shirt for the meeting as she got ready to pop the question.
And when Katie – who is suffering from a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer – presented Ed with a ring and popped the question he couldn’t help himself but accept.

Katie has been battling the disease for eight years and lost her sight to it just two weeks ago. Before her vision failed she painted a picture of a Lego House for Ed which she also gave him as a gift on the night. Ed signed a copy of the painting for Katie to keep which read: “Dear Katie, lovely to finally meet my wife.”

Katie – who hails from Bearsden just outside of Glasgow – was accompanied by her mum Trish to meet Ed. Trish said:  “Katie took the picture of the lego house she’d made and gave Ed a ring with an infinity symbol. Ed loved her artwork and asked if he could keep it for his wall.
“When she presented the ring he smiled and said, ‘I suppose I should say yes. OK.’ He made it really special for her and she’s since said she needs to think about bridesmaids.”
And delighted Katie admitted her marriage to idol Ed won’t be fully official until they set a date. She joked: “We haven’t set the date yet, but it’s not official because we haven’t been in a church.”
Katie was first diagnosed with brain cancer in 2006 before therapy sent it in to remission until 2011 when it came back in her spine. Trish got in touch with Ed’s management after Katie created a wish list and he previously sent her a video message from the US while on tour with Taylor Swift.
She also saw Ed perform in Leeds before her health began to deteriorate rapidly. Trish contacted Les Hoey’s Dreammaker Foundation to help arrange the meeting.

Les said: “Times like this make it worthwhile. To see someone like Ed taking time out of his day is so emotional and has made such a difference.”
