Dev Patel: ‘I’m Never Going To Be Playing The Handsome Lead’

Dev Patel has revealed he doesn’t feel comfortable playing the lead character in a large movie and would rather just work on smaller productions.

The ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ star has admitted he prefers working as part of an ensemble cast in smaller movies such as his latest project ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’.

In his new film Dev stars amongst British acting heavyweights like Dame Judi Dench and Bill Nighy, a prospect that may have daunted other young actors but 21-year-old Dev says he loved working with a large cast.

Speaking to Empire magazine, the actor describes his time playing the lead in M. Night Shyamalan’s flop film ‘The Last Airbender as “horrendous”‘:

”Working on something that big and trying to get heard as an actor is tricky. You feel so diluted and worthless. I would happily shape my career doing great low-budget indies. I’m not that hero-type dude, so I’m never going to be playing the handsome lead character.”

The actor admits he was attracted to Sonny, his character in ‘Marigold Hotel’ because he’s still growing as a man, something Dev can relate to. But whilst Dev may feel like he’s still growing up, his girlfriend Freida Pinto disagrees calling her man an “old soul”. Despite being six years older than her boyfriend the gorgeous actress says Dev is “too mature!”
