Chris Pine Calls Social Media “A Waste of Time”

"Star Trek Into Darkness" Los Angeles Premiere - Arrivals

Star Trek star Chris Pine has commented on how he feels about social media, branding it all “a waste of time”. He says he doesn’t understand why people need to tweet and thinks it’s just a place where people “spew nonsense” and it doesn’t have any real meaning besides boosting people’s egos:

“No, f— no. What am I going to tweet about? My sneakers? Or, ‘I have 140,000 friends on Facebook.’ What does that even mean? I find it to be a waste of time. The Internet is so caustic; just a place where people get to spew nonsense and bulls–t.”

On the paparazzi, Chris says that when he first came in to the spotlight, he found it crazy the lengths photographers would go to:

“They f—ing suck. The light of my flame was really bright after Star Trek [in 2009], and I had that bizarre convergence of everything’s so intense for about a month, and then it died down. During that time, they’re f—ing chasing you, and you’re driving at speeds you shouldn’t be driving at. Thankfully, I don’t really have much of that anymore.”

Commenting on what direction he would like to see his career go in, Chris admits he doesn’t really have a big plan in place but is attracted to certain types of projects:

“Unfortunately, I really don’t have a strategy — I have no desire at all to produce on a micromanaging level. For me, I love exploring ideas and throwing stuff against the wall and seeing what fits, and if I had a really nice collaborative team around me who could deal with the more day-to-day minutia, that would be fun. And directing sometime in the future and writing … yeah, I can see that all in my future. But I can be incredibly lazy.”
