The entertainment industry is a notoriously volatile sector, constantly shifting and fluctuating around the globe. And many impacts are made by the IT sector and new technologies. So here are key things that we think will shape the entertainment industry in the coming years.

1. Film & Video Streaming

Just a few years ago, it would be hard to imagine that streaming services would provide so much of the cinema experience. Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime are all great entertainment brands in their own right. And they offer some of the best content in their respective genres. But they weren’t the first streaming platform; that honour belongs to Redbox, which launched its subscription streaming service in 2016. 

And just a few short months later, Apple launched Apple TV+, which has since become a very popular service. 2. Voice-Activated Everything

Voice interaction is one of the most defining features of the modern age, and it’s easy to see why. Our lives have become increasingly digital, with computers and the internet as ever-present in the background, making our lives a little easier and more efficient than they would be otherwise. The transition has only been made more seamless through voice interaction, allowing us to control our phones, tablets, speakers, and more without even thinking about it.

But the benefits are many, and it’s not just our digital devices that have been enhanced by this technological advancement. With voice activation, we can control everything around us from home systems like lights, thermostats and everything else, right down to the smallest of appliances. 

Well, voice recognition technology is on the way out, with devices like Amazon’s Echo slowly making their way out of the homes of customers, to be replaced with the more intelligent Alexa, with Amazon’s ‘All New Echo’ set to arrive in 2020. And while Alexa is a great product, there’s a chance it won’t be able to compete with Google Home, and Microsoft is already planning to make their digital assistant Cortana available on smart speakers of their own. 

3. Virtual Reality

When Netflix announced their Netflix Originals series ‘Making a Murderer;’ it was an early indicator of what virtual reality (VR) could do for the entertainment industry. While it is by no means the only VR series available, it’s one of the first that’s done a great job in delivering an experience that’s both entertaining and interactive.

Of course, VR hasn’t been without its critics, with many fearing it will become just another gimmick in an already overcrowded entertainment market. But that hasn’t stopped VR from being a booming market in the coming years, with major players like Facebook, Google and even Sony all investing heavily in the technology.
