Ariana Grande Admits ‘Pretending To Be Someone Else’ On Sam & Cat Affected Her Music
Ariana Grande has well and truly put her career in children’s TV behind her. Since the end of Nickelodeon’s Sam & Cat, the pop princess has gone on two score two US number one albums, number one singles across the globe and in her latest video her breasts even double up as a missile launcher.
Yup, the Sam & Cat actress we came to know and love is long gone, but thankfully in her place we have a brand spanking new powerhouse diva and we wouldn’t have it any other way! Thankfully, neither would she, as she admits her time on the hit show put a lot of pressure on her persona in the public eye, adding that she is ready to move on from her teen star past.
Opening up in the latest issue of Marie Claire about making the transition from Nickelodeon actress to sexy pop star, Grande revealed it wasn’t the easiest task. Reminiscing about her early ambitions to record an R&B album from an early age she said: “I was 14 years old and ready to make an R&B album. I was like, ‘Where is that Mary J Blige collab? Where is that Natasha Bedingfield writing session? Where is my session with India.Arie? I’m ready. Let’s go’.
“I wrote this song called ‘Higher,’ and the lyrics were too sexual, too mature. And my mum was like, ‘This is a great song, but damn, you’re too young for this’.”
Living up to her Sam & Cat persona had a huge effect on her music. Last year, critics and fans woke up to Grande’s talents with her flawless debut which landed straight at number one on the US Billboard Top 200 showing off a whole new Ariana Grande.

“I was like, ‘Guys, there has to be a really distinct difference between me and my character’. And we did that with ‘The Way’. I dyed my hair back to brown. I made out with a rapper in the video,” she told the mag. “I made the point I wanted to make. And I was excited to do so after so many years of pretending to be somebody else in front of a lot of people.”
As herself, she’s landed six European nominations this week and will be in the UK to perform at the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards next month. Her latest album, ‘My Everything’ became her second US number one album last month, peaking at number two in the UK.
