Adele Matches Whitney Houston's US Chart Record

Adele’s multi-million-selling, multi-Grammy-winning album 21 has matched the late Whitney Houston’s chart record in the US.

As the album spends its 20th week on top of the Billboard 200, it matches the same duration managed by Houston’s The Bodyguard soundtrack in 1992-3.

The ‘Someone Like You’ singer’s opus sold 237,000 copies in the US last week, a mammoth 95% gain on the previous week.

It is likely that the record will enjoy a record-breaking 21st week on top next week, as this week’s chart only accounts for one day after her clean sweep at the Grammy Awards.

It’s also, ironically, likely that Houston herself will garner more sales, as fans’ tribute purchases following her tragic death on Saturday (February 11) are reflected in the charts.

Kelly Clarkson remains at the top of the singles countdown, as ‘What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger)’ passes the 1 million sales barrier.
