Before TV series like The Vampire Diaries, True Blood, The Originals and Teen Wolf emerged and even though the Twilight Saga renewed interest in the vampire genre, it was Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV series) that changed the landscape of TV and film forever.
Buffy is one of the most influential TV series ever created, with the clever storyline and witty dialogue. The hit TV show fast became a cult classic that would be seen and heard of in years to come.
Even today, Buffy is referenced in a number of supernatural TV shows showing that it still has an effect on contemporary television.
The series used ‘demons’ as metaphors for real-life issues. BTVS stared Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, who, was a 16 year old teenager, a vampire slayer and who had to save the world on a daily basis from vampires, demons and everything that went bump in the night. Buffy was also a high school student who dreamt of a normal life. She had friends Willow (Alyson Hannigan), Xander (Nicholas Brendon) and her ‘watcher’ mentor Rupert Giles (Anthony Head) who assisted her in battle and helped her maintain some level of normality.
Buffy also fell in love with the vampire Angel (David Boreanaz) before he got his own spin-off show! As the series went on, we were introduced to fan favourites such as Spike (James Marsters), Anya Jenkins (Emma Caulfield) and Faith (Eliza Dushku). The show went on to break boundaries with episodes like the silent ‘Hush’ and the musical ‘Once More With Feeling.’ Show creator Joss Whedon has enjoyed much success since, especially in recent years with The Avengers and Agents of SHIELD.
While the cult TV show ended 10 years ago, we take a look at what the stars of Buffy have been up to in recent years.
Sarah Michelle Gellar
Sarah Michelle Gellar went on to have a movie career after Buffy ended, releasing the hit horror film ‘The Grudge’ which was a box office success. She also starred in Scooby Doo with her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. Sarah returned to TV in 2012 with the short-lived drama series ‘Ringer.’ She now stars in CBS sitcom ‘The Crazy Ones’ with Hollywood legend Robin Williams.
The hunk who made our hearts melt as the brooding vampire Angel stars in successful detective drama ‘Bones’ which is on its tenth series at the moment. Speaking about whether he would play Angel on the big screen in either Buffy or it’s spin off series Angel, he took to his Twitter and said it would never happen. (Probably because vampires aren’t supposed to age).
Arguably the most successful actress after played super witch Willow on Buffy, Alyson Hannigan stars as Lilly Aldrin in ‘How I Met Your Mother.’ The series is on its ninth and final season. The actress had been in all three of the original American Pie films during her Buffy years. Alyson also met her husband Alexis Denisof on the set of Buffy.
Another successful Buffy alumni is Charisma Carpenter, who played mean girl Cordelia Chase on Buffy and Angel. The star went on to have guest roles in a number of popular series such as Charmed, Veronica Mars, Burn Notice and Supernatural. She currently plays Ann Rebecca Sewell in The Lying Game.
Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander in the series, has taken a much quieter approach to TV since Buffy ended. He’s had guest roles on shows like Criminal Minds and Private Practice. He attends many Buffy related conventions across the world.
Anthony Head who was Buffy’s watcher, Giles, has been in a number of British TV shows since. He’s had roles in Little Britain, Dr Who and Merlin. The actor has also been in well-received films Iron Lady and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.
Bad boy vampire Spike, played by James Marsters has followed his characters bad boy persona into a number of TV shows such as Smallville, Torchwood, Hawaii Five-0, Supernatural and Warehouse 13.
