Jodie Foster On ‘Coming Out’ Speech: ‘It Didn’t Take Me Too Long To Write’

Jodie Foster’s epic speech at the 2013 Golden Globes certainly was one of the most talked-about points of the night, that and Sacha Baron Cohen’s joke about Anne Hathaway’s flashing photographs, it nearly clocked seven minutes, proving that the Oscar-winner had a lot to get off her chest – but that was an edited version.

The actress, who was presented with the Cecil B. DeMille Award on Sunday night, admitted that the speech itself was easy to write despite its personal focus.

“It didn’t take me too long to write,” she told E! on the Golden Globes red carpet before actually delivering her speech, before adding: “But there was a lot of whittling down. I had to do a lot of whittling down.”

Jodie’s speech took six minutes and 47 seconds, so you get the gist of how long it could’ve been – in it, she acknowledge the speculation and rumours that have been in circulation about her sexuality for years, as well as giving a shout-out to the ex-love of her life.

“I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago, back in the stone age. In those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family, coworkers and then gradually, proudly, to everyone who knew her. To everyone she actually met,” she said.

“There is no way I could stand here tonight without acknowledging one of the greatest loves of my life. My ex-partner in love but righteous soul sister in life, my most beloved BFF of 20 years, Cydney Bernard. I am so proud of our modern family.”

The unexpected speech had celebs doing everything from crying, asking Jodie Foster to be their best pal or scoffing at her “unnecessary” need to address rumours surrounding her sexuality.

Here’s a round-up of the celebrity reaction on Twitter:
