A poster promoting Naomi Watts’ latest movie, ‘Diana’, has been placed near to the entrance of the Pont de l’Alma tunnel, where Diana, the Princess of Wales died as the result of a car crash in 1997.
The large poster for the biopic, which has been widely criticised, was photographed near the Flame of Liberty statue as well as a the tunnel recently.
One of the late Princess’s confidantes, Rosa Monckton, has reportedly told MailOnline: “I really don’t have any words to describe how I feel about this cynical and shameless attempt to publicise a film that should never have been made.”
She also called the placement of the advert “crass” and that she didn’t actually expect the film’s marketers to “stoop so low” as to place a poster near to the site of the fatal crash.
The movie, directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, has been widely panned by critics, and Monckton has slammed the move as “despicable”.
“To have made a film so speculative and as this is disgusting enough, but to then advertise it on the spot at which she died is despicable,” she said. “It is a terrible intrusion into her memory, not to mention the lives of her sons, whose feelings are often forgotten in these stories.”
Monckton hopes that the film’s distributors will “take it down right away”.
Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Fayed were both killed as a result of the tragic accident, which occurred on August 31, 1997.
The new movie is based on Diana’s secret romance with Dr Hasnat Khan, the Pakistani heart surgeon, who she reportedly dated for two years until just a few months before her death.
According to People magazine, a spokesperson for Paris City Hall has said that the posters for Diana, were “all over” Paris, and that the one that was placed by the Alma tunnel was just “one of many”.
