5 Stars Speak on Taking a Career Break

Taking a career break can help get the perspective back or just allow for some family bonding time. These 5 stars have spoken on the idea of taking time off work to grow and relax or watch their family grow up. Some have already tried taking a break and weren’t too comfortable with having so much free time on their hands. Others like the idea of taking a long period of work off so they can be themselves for a while without feeling pressure to commit to their jobs. Here is what these 5 celebs have said on the subject of taking a hiatus from their career.

Ryan Gosling

"The Ides of March" Los Angeles Premiere - Arrivals

Ryan would like to take a break in the future: “I’ve been doing (acting) it too much. I’ve lost perspective on what I’m doing. “I think it’s good for me to take a break and reassess why I’m doing it and how I’m doing it. And I think this is probably a good way to learn about that. I need a break from myself as much as I imagine the audience does.” We don’t, of course, but you know, it’s nice of him to be thinking about us. The more opportunities I’m given, the more I learn about how easy it is to (f***) it up. You fight for freedom and then you get it, and then you have enough rope to hang yourself. It’s like trying to exercise some restraint because I do have so much freedom.”

Kanye West
2011 CFDA Fashion Awards - Cocktails

Kanye took a break from music because he wanted to develop his sound: “I left America. I stopped doing music all together. I just took some time… It was the first time that I got to stop since my mom had passed. I had never stopped and never tried to even soak in what… had happened. It was time to take a break and develop more as a person, as a creator, and focus more on my thoughts and my ideas and what I wanted to bring to the world.”

Drew Barrymore
LACMA 2013 Art + Film Gala Honoring Martin Scorsese and David Hockney Presented by Gucci - Arrivals

Drew tried a career break but she couldn’t stand doing nothing: “It freaked me out. I was afraid to let go. But with great risk comes great reward. We always wonder (when single), ‘Where is this person? Oh my God, I’m lonely; what’s my future?’ But eventually you’ll meet somebody, and this time will be gone. And you will kick yourself for not enjoying it. For me, that year was a great investment. It made me realise, I’m ready for something different.”

Sandra Bullock
17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards - Arrivals

Sandra would like to space out her projects more so she can spend more time with her son: “All I know is that I want to be able to enjoy being a mom. Doing all the things moms get to do, outside in the sun, in the world. The career will have to wait for a bit. I don’t want to step into that world until I can find out what room I left my armour in. You need tough skin to be in this business. I don’t have tough skin right now and I don’t want it.”

UJA-Federation Of New York Music Visionary Of The Year Award Luncheon - Arrivals

Adele wants to take time off to focus on her relationships: “I am f***ing off for four or five years. If I am constantly working, my relationships fail. So at least now I can have enough time to write a happy record. And be in love and be happy. And then I don’t know what I’ll do. Get married. Have some kids. Plant a nice vegetable patch.”
