Jared Leto

86th Annual Academy Awards - Press Room

For his Oscar-winning role in Dallas Buyers Club, Jared had to play the role of a transgender and was inspired by his grandmother: ”I waxed my whole body and my eyebrows I lost a lot of weight, I changed my voice – the dialect and register – it was a pretty intense journey. [Saying ‘Darlin” at the end of sentences], my grandmother used to do that, she was from the South and there was certainly a bit of grandma in there.”

Tom Ford
Elle Style Awards 2014 - Arrivals

Tom was always wowed by his grandmother’s fashion sense: “My grandmother was probably the first person who I thought was beautiful. She was incredibly stylish, she had big hair, big cars. I was probably 3 years old, but she was like a cartoon character. She always smelled great and looked great. She always had the latest things. She was larger than life to me, even as an adult, but when I was a child it was really like she was from another planet. It seemed like she lived in a different world, and wherever that was, I wanted to go.”

Florence’s grandma gave her some great advice: “She told me, ‘Concentrate on your perfect career’. Can you imagine? It’s like, ‘You’ve left your laundry out and it’s going to rain’. ‘OK Grandma, thanks!’ I thought it would be something, y’know, more cryptic.”

Kylie is inspired by her grandmother’s life: ”I always try to think of what my 94-year-old grandmother would do. I asked her just a few years ago, ‘Nain, how do you do it? You’re just so cool.’ She had six kids, emigrated to Australia from Wales and is the great matriarch of the family. And she said, ‘Well Kylie, you just go with the flow.’ ”
