Lianne La Havas is a 22-year-old 'Next Big Thing' whose name won't yet be familiar to the masses, but who has been putting in the hours of hard labour in the hope of a mainstream breakthrough.
She's supported Bon Iver on tour, been longlisted for the BBC Sound of 2012 prize, and her own four-date residency at London's The Social sold out in under four hours.
So what's all the fuss about? Lianne's sound is billed as "bringing a modern tongue to a classic style": the style in question is a kind of mellow jazz-soul, and her 'modern tongue' is a contemporary batch of break-up lyrics.

Her second EP, Forget, is due on February 13 and offers five tracks as a taster of what's to be expected from her upcoming album. The title track is its highlight, a defiant anthem putting Lianne's smoky vocals against an insistant guitar riff and catchy "do-do-do" backing vocals.
Also worth a mention is 'Au Cinema', a song recorded at a recent concert, that opens with a joke to the audience about its rather obvious translation and gives that rich, velvet voice a chance to do some showing off in a live environment.
All in all it's enough justification to give the full LP a good seeing-to when it's released later this year. Her voice is her ace card and her musical style achieves the difficult task of sticking out from the on-trend club-pop bandwagon without being inaccessible to radio playlisters. Keep an eye on this one.
