Since her marriage to Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Hollywood career had gone into relative freefall, the once promising young star of Dawson's Creek took a three-year break from acting after beginning to date Cruise, and in that time Hollywood tends to forget you, especially when you passed up the chance to be in the movie of the decade 'The Dark Knight'.
After returning with the poorly received 'Mad Money' and largely restricting herself to smaller parts, Holmes star seemed to be on the wane, even as her husband's career ploughed on unaffected by public suspicions over his religious connections to the Church of Scientology.
Yet Katie is back working again, starting coincidentally with a new movie about a single mum called 'Molly', and anyone in any doubt of her acting credentials should look at her earlier work in amongst other things 'The Ice Storm' and 'Go'.
According to The Huffington Post, one of those who directed her, Peter Hedges was full of praise for the young Holmes, saying: "What I always say about Katie is she's a good girl, she was raised right and she knows what it's like to have flown coach [second class]."
No one knows for sure the reasons for Holmes absence, although even if it was merely being besotted at the start of a new relationship, it still makes her one of Hollywood's lost talents.
Hedges was enthusiastic about her prospects, saying: "She'll surprise a lot of people, because she's really very gifted. What I'd love to see is people really be open to giving her the chance to surprise us."
One doesn't like to say that their may be an upside to a marriage ending in divorce, but in this case, if it's the resurrection of Katie Holmes' career.
