Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has let slip that far from being bothered by explicit fan fiction which depicts his character in sexual encounters with sidekick Dr Watson (Martin Freeman), he finds the stories "flattering".
Since the BBC's update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective stories became a huge hit, the web has been buzzing with fan-written pieces imagining the characters engaged in activities unlikely to be screened at prime time on BBC1.
Cumberbatch told MTV News: "I am startlingly aware of it. I don’t go seeking it, but Martin Freeman, who was an absolute Luddite on the first series, suddenly came back from New Zealand... and he had this beautiful Mac with him and said, 'Hey, look at this Tumblr'. And I said, 'What? Tumblr? What?' He knows more about it than I do and he was showing me some of them. Some of it is really racy, unviewable even on MTV."
The actor, who's set to play the villain Khan in the new 'Star Trek' movie, admitted that although he liked the way the stories showed his body, he was unlikely to act out any of the scenarios fans had dreamed up for his character, saying:
“I'm ripped, doing something I wouldn't normally do with my body, or have done to it, involving Watson. So that's as far as I'll hint about that one, but it's all there on the web if you want to find it."
Whether or not the stories give Sherlock co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss any ideas remains to be seen.
