Stars hit the floats

Mary J Blige, Cee Lo Green and Avril Lavigne were among the stars out in New York yesterday for the 85th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

They, along with reigning Miss America Teresa Scanlan, American Idol winner Scotty McCreery and the legendary Neil Diamond, greeted the multi-million-strong crowd.

Highlights included giant balloons of animated characters, including Buzz Lightyear, Mickey Mouse, Spongebob Squarepants and a Pokemon. McCreery McCreery was left red-faced by his performance, when he "did an Ashley Simpson": missed his cue to "sing" and was caught miming. Awkward!

"We expected 3.5 million people at the parade and I'd say we were north of that," said Macy's M.N. spokesman Orlando Veras to Reuters, adding that around 50 million were expected to have watched it on TV.

The show included 11 marching bands, 800 clowns, 1,600 cheerleaders, dancers and singers, crews manning 27 floats and handlers for 15 giant balloons and 44 smaller balloons.

Lavigne tweeted afterwards: "Happy Thanksgiving. I'm thankful for my family, my friends, and my FANS!!!!!! Thank you to all my fans for making my dream come true.....

"And thank you to my family for loving me and being supportive and thank you to my friends for being loyal xoxo (sic)"

Yesterday, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Zoe Saldana also got into the spirit of the occasion by feeding the homeless in LA.
