MOVIE REVIEW: Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience (U)

Love them or loathe them, the Jonas Brothers fit firmly into the category of music superstars. Legions of adoring fans pack out their concerts all around the world, and the albums have been just as successful. This, their second cinematic release of the year if you count the Night At The Museum 2 cameo, disappointed on it’s American release, making less than half of it’s predicted total, but do the figures reflect the quality?

The film is exactly what it says on the poster: a 3D concert experience, filmed over two nights of the New York leg of last year’s Burnin’ Up tour. We are treated to a full set from the brothers, including guest spots from Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato, and interspersed between the songs are short clips showing the hectic lives of global superstars, including some staged comedy skits.

It’s very hard to review such a film, as the content relies entirely on how you feel about the band. It is 100% Jonas, with the shorts largely featuring hysterical pre-teens shouting “OMIGOD I LOVE YOU NICK/JOE/KEVIN” and begging the often bemused-looking pop-rockers into signing shoes, phones, coke cans(!) or whatever happens to be in their hands at the time. The concert segments are visually polished, and the 3D provides the most interest for non-fans. Utilizing the medium far more than most movies, little tricks like putting their mics into the camera and flicking guitar picks ‘at’ the audience are a nice touch. The music will do little to win over newcomers, however, and you will feel a little alienated if you aren’t familiar with the set list.

Channeling the fab four in the filmed segments, especially the opening sequence which is reminiscent of A Hard Day’s Night, the band themselves are likeable, if a little too clean cut. During the show, Nick and Kevin appear to be trying to play as many instruments as possible, while Joe (a sort of Disney version of Mick Jagger) is happy to soak up the adulation and milk the spotlight for all it’s worth.

If you hate the band, this will be the worst film ever made. Likewise, many of those screaming girls will be proclaiming it as the best film, like, ever. In reality it is a very well put together film designed to be nirvana for the fans, but offers little of interest to everyone else.
