Kiefer Sutherland has been charged with assault over an incident at a nightclub in New York.

The 24 actor is alleged to have head-butted Proenza Schouler fashion designer Jack McCollough in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Reports claim Kiefer confronted Jack after he bumped into actress Brooke Shields.

Kiefer, who is currently on probation over a drink-driving conviction, turned himself into police in New York yesterday.

The actor is due to face a minor assault charge in court on June 22.

The party at SubMercer took place following the Costume Institute Gala, which was attended by the likes of Kate Moss and Justin Timberlake.

The fashion designer has claimed he was left with a cut nose following the alleged incident.

Brooke has said she was unaware of what provoked Keifer.

The actor, who plays action hero Jack Bauer in 24, spent 48 days in a Californian jail two years ago after he pleaded no contest to a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.
