ABC News’ Ben Sherwood announced Sam’s departure from the network to become the “on-air face” of The Weather Channel as a host and managing editor, according to USA Today.
Sam, along with George Stephanopoulos, Robin Roberts, Lara Spencer and Josh Elliott, overtook NBC’s morning show, Today, in the ratings for the first time in 16 years during the week of April 9, 2012.
The weatherman, who publicly came out last year, has made 1,800 weather broadcast and reported live at nearly all of America’s greatest weather events during his time at GMA, according to Sherwood.
He has "broadcast live from a raft floating between polar icebergs, danced the salsa on Despierta America and interviewed countless newsmakers, celebrities and chefs. On his show Sea Rescue, viewers have shared Sam's passion for marine animal rescue, rehabilitation and release."
Sam’s former weather foe, NBC’s Al Roker of Today, will now be his colleague at The Weather Channel. Al hosts a morning show on the network called Wake Up With Al.
Ginger Zee, who has filled in and worked with Sam in the past, will take over full-time weather responsibilities at GMA and across ABC News.
Sam’s last day on GMA will be Wednesday, Dec. 4.
