Chris' Prayers For Virginia Victims May End His American Idol Run

In country-themed show...

Wednesday 18th Apr 2007

Though it was a country-themed show on 'American Idol' last night, all the talk was about Chris Richardson and his spontaneous tribute to the victims in the Virginia Tech tragedy.

After being lambasted by Simon Cowell for his version of Rascal Flatts' 'Mayberry', Chris switched from shouting back at the judge to extending his thoughts and prayers to the victims of the shooting.

As Entertainment Weekly put it: "By sniping at Simon first, realizing he was in a losing battle, then turning the subject to an unspeakable national tragedy, Chris created the season's most uncomfortable moment"

Whether that'll be enough to save him, or have him kicked off, we'll find out later tonight.

Elsewhere Jordin Sparks, Melinda Doolittle and Blake Lewis all gave strong performances to ease their inevitable progress into the final few.

The country theme, following last week's Latino songs, saw Sanjaya sing 'Something To Talk About', a performance described as "utterly horrendous" by Simon Cowell. It looks like his bizarre reign may be coming to an end...

We'll bring you the full 'American Idol' results tomorrow!

Poll  Do You Think Chris' Tribute Was Genuine?

Yeah, it was sweet

No, it was wrong of him

  • Oh yeah, the second that came out of him, I cringed like I never have before. OH man, I am sick of this "thoughts and prayers" lame comment that we always hear during times like this. Almost as sickening as "closure". Ask the survivors if a candle in a plastic cup has ANYTHING to do with healing/helping, etc. Mostly it's posers who 'get religion' at a fashionable moment. Doubt me? Try to mention prayer or God any other time in the public forum.

  • I think Chris was sincere, he's a kid and maybe didn't express himself well, however, what I found appalling was Simon rolling his eyes afterwards. I love to hate Simon like everyone else, but his reaction was disgraceful.

  • I really think that Chris was sincere, but if it was a thing just to get pity votes well that is very sick.

  • Me and my wife both had the exact same reaction as Simon. It seemed to me that he just did that to deflect attention from his horrible performance to get the sympathy vote.

  • Simon's eye roll was repulsive. Chris Richardson is from Virginia. Who the hell is Simon Cowell or anyone else to even suggest that Richardson's comments weren't sincere.
