EastEnders Beats Downton Abbey, Coronation Street In Christmas Day Ratings

Soap wins overnight figures for the fourth year running

EastEnders has triumphed in the Christmas Day overnight ratings figures for the fourth year in a row.

The extra-dramatic festive edition of the long running soap, broadcast on BBC1, attracted 9.4 million viewers as Derek Branning kicked the bucket and Max Branning's secret ex-wife made an explosive arrival.

Coronation Street was forced into second place overall, earning an impressive 8.8 million viewers.

The BBC completed the rest of the Top 5, with Strictly Come Dancing taking third place (7.8 million), The Royle Family fourth (7.7 million) and Doctor Who fifth (7.6 million).

Downton Abbey and Call The Midwife tied in sixth place (7.3 million); Downton inevitably suffering from being put head-to-head against EastEnders.

However, as with last year, the ITV period drama is expected to pile on a substantial amount of viewers once consolidated ratings from catch-up services and repeat broadcasts are added on to the overnight figure in the coming weeks.
