The Hobbit Continues To Trump Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher At US Box Office

The flick took a further £22 million over the weekend

'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' has continued it's domination on the US box office, fending off its competition by grossing a further £22.6 million ($36.7 million) over the weekend.

Peter Jackson's latest Middle Earth instalment has easily kept it's competition at bay with Tom Cruise's new action action flick, 'Jack Reacher', trailing behind with £9.6 million ($15.6 million), placing it at number two.

While 'The Hobbit' is still at the top of the box office, the takings are down on the opening weekend's $84.8 million, with the movie expected to fall behind the success of the last 'Lord of the Rings' movie, 'The Return of the King', which took $1.2 billion worldwide when it was released in 2003.

According to Hollywood.com's Paul Dergarabedian, the 57% decline in takings are most likely down to the public doing last minute Christmas shopping over the weekend.

"The real winner this weekend might be holiday shopping," he said.

Meanwhile, at number three is Judd Apatow's 'Knocked Up' sequel, 'This Is 40', while Barbara Streisand's comedy 'The Guilt Trip' debuted at number six.

Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner movies says the key movie period is yet to hit.

"We haven't reached the key holiday play time yet," Fellman said. "It explodes on Tuesday and goes right through the end of the year."
