The Beatles legend Paul McCartney will be replacing late rocker Kurt Cobain when he joins the surviving members of Nirvana for a performance at the 121212 Hurricane Sandy benefit concert in New York tonight.

Foo Fighters star Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic have reportedly asked McCartney to "jam" with them for their performance at NYC's Madison Square Garden on Wednesday evening. McCartney couldn't be happier about the concert and explained how the collaboration was proposed, admitting that he had no recollection of the band.

"[I phoned Dave and he invited me to come over and] jam with some mates," McCartney told The Sun.

"I didn't really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said 'Whoa? You guys haven't played together for all that time?'"

"And somebody whispered to me 'That's Nirvana. You're Kurt.' I couldn't believe it," McCartney added.

Nirvana's performance will be the first time Grohl and Novoselic have joined each other on stage since the death of Cobain 20 years ago.

Other acts scheduled to perform at the concert include, Alicia Keys, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Kanye West, Bon Jovi and The Rolling Stones, who are currently in the midst of their 50th anniversary tour.

No doubt McCartney and Nirvana will put on a rock'n'roll show!
