Kate Middleton Reveals School Nickname 'Squeak'

Duchess of Cambridge was named after guinea pig

The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, has admitted that at school she had a rather different nickname to 'K-Middy', revealing that schoolmates named her 'Squeak' after her beloved guinea pig.

The Duchess visited her old prep school St Andrews where she said she "adored" her nine years, and told the school's current pupils that she got the unusual nickname due to the pets she was allowed to keep during her time there.

Kate, 30, let on to pupils at the school in Pangbourne, Berkshire about her time as a girl and told how she kept two pet guinea pigs there, one called Pip and one called Squeak, and that due to her sister being called Pippa she was known as the latter name.

According to The Daily Mail Kate told young children in the pre-prep part of the school that, "There was one called Pip and one called Squeak, because my sister was called Pippa and I was Squeak".

The Duchess was opening a new Astroturf hockey pitch for the pupils, appropriately on St Andrews day, and was even prepared to join in a game of hockey with the girls at St Andrews who are set to follow in her footsteps, despite wearing an Alexander McQueen dress.

In a speech given to inspire pupils the future Queen said: "It is such a treat l to be back here at St Andrew’s. I absolutely loved my time here; they were some of my happiest years, which makes it so incredibly special to be here today.

"In fact, I enjoyed it so much that when I had to leave, I told my mother that I was going to come back to be a teacher. While that didn’t quite happen, I was thrilled to have been asked back today on St. Andrew's Day."

She continued to describe how much she loved sport, saying: "It was while I was here at school that I realised my love of sport. Sport has been a huge part of my life, and I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunities I had to get outside and play in such wonderful open spaces - though sadly there was nothing quite as glamorous as this in my time!"

Touchingly she finished off by hoping that the girls made as much of the new sporting areas as she liked to in her day, continuing: "I hope that you all enjoy playing sport here as much as I used to, and make the most of these incredible facilities."
