The watch was inscribed with the message "Jack with love as always Marilyn May 29th 1962," and was also sold with a poem titled "A heartfelt plea on your birthday," which was typed on a paper disc and placed at the bottom of the case protecting the watch.
The poem read: "Let lovers breathe their sighs
And roses bloom and music sound
Let passion burn on lips and eyes
And pleasures merry world go round
Let golden sunshine flood the sky
AND LET ME LOVE
OR LET ME DIE!"
Crikey! It was widely believed that Monroe and Kennedy were having an affair around the time the watch was given, the same time that Monroe sang Happy Birthday to the President in Madison Square Gardens.
Bill Panagopulos, founder of Connecticut-based auctioneer Alexander Autographs who sold the watch on Monday said that it had been kept secret for decades.
Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas in 1963. Monroe allegedly died of an overdose of barbiturates in 1962 though the conspiracies surrounding both their deaths are ongoing.
