Michael Fassbender may have thought he had the video game blockbusters all to himself when signed up to 'Assassin's Creed', but it turns out he's got a rival in 'The Dark Knight Rises' star Tom Hardy.
According to E!, Hardy has been cast in a new film based on Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, the video game that has gone through six installments and follows Sam Fisher, a covert operative, who Hardy is reportedly set to play.
Hardy wowed as Bane in 'The Dark Knight Rises', could certainly convince as a beefy agent, while Fassbender has signed up to co-produce and star in 'Assassin's Creed', the time-travelling game which sends the player back in time as part of an ancient order of assassins.
Fassbender is now hot property in Hollywood, starring as Magneto in 'X-Men: First Class' and 'Prometheus', but Hardy is becoming a top level leading man himself.
With both stars sex-symbols, it could turn out to be a battle of the hotties as the video games go head to head for the action audience, and with their leads' allure, for female fans too.
It marks a reversal of the formula that spawned one of the most successful video game franchises to date; 'Tomb Raider', in which Angelina Jolie combined action with sex appeal to turn out two blocbusters.
Lara herself could be set to rejoin the fray, with a reboot scheduled for 2013.
