While the showbiz world might have been shocked at the news that Russell Crowe and wife Danielle Spencer have split, those close to the couple claim the marriage ended over a year ago, with reports the pretty blonde had got close to her Dancing With The Stars partner Damien Whitewood.
Shots of the 43 year-old were published earlier this year in the Australian Sunday Telegraph of Danielle and her dancer partner with their arms around each other during a night out.
Though, she made a well timed public appearance with the 'Gladiator' star only a few days later, insiders at the show told The Australian Telegraph that Russell had not been mentioned during Danielle's stint on DWTS.
"There was pretty much no mention of (Russell) backstage," a source from Channel 7 told the paper.
"It's like it was understood not to talk about him or something.”
For the last year Russell, who has two children with his singer/songwriter wife, has spent much of his time abroad shooting movies, though when he did return to Sydney reportedly lived separately from his family.
Crowe lived in a city-based penthouse, while Danielle and the children moved into a $10 million Rose Bay mansion, with sources claiming there was little sign the actor ever lived there.
"(There were) no signs a man had even lived there," one source claimed, calling the decoration “girly”.
Those close to the actor claim Russell has been getting ready for the divorce over the last year and with five films out including 'Les Miserables', 'Man of Steel' and 'Noah' which he is currently filming in New York. The couple are believed to have signed a pre-nup worth $20 million.
