The second episode of the brand new period drama The Paradise aired on BBC One on Tuesday, bringing with it further insight into the intriguing goings-on at the 1870s department store run by the handsome Mr Muray.

The episode introduces Jocelin, a close friend of the wealthy banker's daughter, Katherine Glendenning. Jocelin thinks that The Paradise is wonderful, and proceeds to order almost every item in the store in every colour available, despite being unable to pay for the items right away.

However, because Mr Muray is relying on a loan from Katherine's father, Lord Glendenning, he decides not to give Jocelin the bill right away, and allows her to continue her shopping spree.

In an effort to make as many sales as he can, shop assistant Sam turns on his best charms with Jocelin, but she begins to have a breakdown and fears she might faint. Jocelin asks Sam to help her, so he breaks the heel off of Jocelin's shoe so that she can pretend that a twisted ankle has caused her tears.

However, Sam's kindness backfires when Jocelin requests that he visits her at the Glendenning's house where she is staying. Jocelin wants to thank Sam by giving him a gift, but during his visit she becomes emotional again and reveals that she has left her husband, but that no one must know.

Just as Sam is comforting Jocelin, Katherine and her father walk in and see the pair in a compromising position, so Jocelin slaps Sam to cover up her actions, making it look like Sam was trying to force himself upon her.

Jocelin, Katherine and Lord Glendenning demand that Sam should be dismissed from The Paradise, and despite sticking up for Sam, Mr Muray and his right-hand-man Dudley agree to take action.

Unfortunately for Jocelin, Katherine, Lord Glendenning, Muray and Dudley manage to uncover the truth about what really happened with Sam and eventually, Jocelin gives in and comes clean to Mr Muray. Sam is reinstated in his position on the shop floor, and Lord Glendenning covers the entire bill for all of Jocelin's shopping, lucky girl!

Meanwhile, the romance between Katherine and Mr Muray continues to be shaky, as sparks fly between him the new shop assistant Denise Lovett, the central character of the show.

Denise comes up with a brilliant idea to help bring more customers into the store: 'Miss Paradise Pink', a competition that sees one woman win the a dress and a framed photograph for on display at The Paradise. Denise's clever ideas continue to impress Mr Muray as seems to grow ever fonder of her.

The episode also reveals that giggly shop girl Pauline has a crush on Sam, while it looks like Sam only has eyes for Denise, and Denise only has eyes for Muray. Oh, the drama!

The mystery behind Mr Muray's wife's death remains unsolved, and we still don't know exactly what went on with Muray and Clara, Denise's shop assistant rival.

It looks like next week's episode could be a shocker though, when Denise discovers baby boy that has been abandoned in the shop.

We can't wait to find out more secrets about The Paradise in the next episode!
