Gary Barlow's X Factor wildcard Christopher Maloney has said that hearing of his initial elimination was as devastating as a family death.
Speaking to Entertainmentwise host Georgie Barrat, the big-voiced singer said he was "absolutely devastated" when the Take That frontman delivered the blow.
He said: "For Gary to have faith in me and bring me back as a wildcard... I can't let him down.
"I got told that it was a no by Gary and I was absolutely devastated... it's on par with when me grandad passed away."
However, he revealed that he was told of the twist just "two hours" after filming the emotionally-charged scenes.
On Barlow's skills as a mentor, Maloney said: "He's totally hands-on. He's been there every other day. He's really, really helping me."
Maloney, Adam Burridge, Amy Mottram or Times Red will be re-instated on Saturday.
Maloney is the narrow bookies' favourite, with Mottram a close second.
