Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to open the doors on his private life, and discuss the moment that he admitted to fathering a secret son after an affair with his housekeeper in his new autobiography ‘Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story’.
The ‘Expendables’ actor allegedly reveals that he confessed to the love child during a couples’ therapy session with his then-wife Maria Shriver in January 2011 in a section obtained by the New York Daily News.
The incident occurred just a day after he left his office as governor of California, when Schriver reportedly questioned him about the identity of the boy.
According to The New York Daily News, Scwarzenegger reveals that he “wanted” for many years to believe that he was not the father of the child, who was born in 1997.
As the boy grew up, Arnold reveals that he couldn’t deny that the resemblance was there: “I realised there was little doubt that he was my son.”
Shriver and Schwarzenegger split shortly after the actor confirmed that he was the father of Joseph, whose mother is Mildred Baena, who was the family's housekeeper.
According to the report, Schwarzenegger reveals details about their session which took place on January 4, 2011. The actor admits that he thought that it was going to be about how to help the family make a change from having a public to private life.
"The minute we sat down, the therapist turned to me and said, 'Maria wanted to come here today and to ask about a child - whether you fathered a child with your housekeeper Mildred.' I told the therapist 'It's true.’,” he writes.
Schwarzenegger says that he knows he should have told his wife sooner but, "instead of doing the right thing, I'd just put the truth in a mental compartment and locked it up where I didn't deal with it every day".
In the book, he also reveals that his son was conceived while he was filming ‘Batman and Robin’, in the guest house of his home when his wife was away.
Explaining why he kept the mother of his son working for the family after he realised the child was his, Schwarzenegger said it was to “control the situation”.
