Fans all over the world know Justin Bieber’s humble beginnings in Canada, but now in a new memoir, they’re able to learn more about the woman who brought him into the world – his mother, Pattie Mallette.
In her owns words, Nowhere But Up: The Story of Justin Bieber’s Mom, the 36-year-old Mallette, made an appearance on Today alongside Kathie Lee Gifford, speaking of losing her virginity at 15, becoming pregnant at 17 and her life as a struggling single mom.

Stemming from her emotional and psychological trauma from being sexually abused as a child, Mallette attempted to take her own life.
But the teenager – who was “messed up” on drugs and alcohol at the time she tried to take her own life – said she had a spiritual awakening when a Christian counselor visited her while in a psychiatric ward recovering, while she was carrying Justin Bieber.
"I just knew I couldn't [it]. I just knew I couldn't," Mallette said. "I just know I had to keep [Justin]. I didn't know how I was going to do it. But I just knew that I couldn't abort. I had to do my best. I had to see what I could do. And I was determined to do whatever it took."
Because of her experiences, Mallette was inspired to share her story with girls who can related to her battles, and refers to the writing process of the memoir cathartic.
"I pretty much bared my soul. It definitely furthered my healing process," she explains. "Justin's really supportive, and really proud of me."
