It's now the third highest grossing movie of all time, but Joss Whedon's 'The Avengers could have begun very differently, as this amazing clip shows.
In the scene agent Anita Hill (Cobie Smulders) recounts the epic battle which ends the movie, in a manner that will have obvious echoes of 9/11. If the opening were included it would've made the movie essentially on giant flashback.
In keeping with the lighter tone of the film, the opening seems to have been ditched in favour of the actual opening, which showed Loki (Tom Hiddlestone) plotting with an alien race to destroy Earth.
Referring to the final battle as the 'Tesseract Event' (a tesseract being a source of great power in the movie's universe), with Smulder ' character debriefing after the 'event'.
Whedon's light hearted approach to 'The Avengers' has won praise from many critics an cinema goers alike.
However the new clip shows that the movie wasn't always slated to be exactly as it finished, and that film makers were toying with a very different opening.
The scene is available on the movie's blu-ray DVD, which is released on September 25.
