The box-office seems to have quietened down after the epic success of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘ The Avengers’, as not a single release has been able to top ‘The Expendables 2’, despite disappointing figures for Sylvester Stallone’s action caper.

In fact cinema goers have stayed away en masse, with the $83 million takings for 'The Expendables' marking the worst takings for over a year. The action sequel is leading the charge to mediocrity, dropping 53 percent from its first weekend in theatres.

This week was the least attended time at the box office since December 9-11, 2011, when the top 12 films earned just $67.8 million.

Although ‘The Expendables 2’, starring Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Bruce Willis as well as Stallone took $13.5 million, it is disappointing for the movie considering it carries a reported $100 million budget.

It is also the lowest total for a number one movie since ‘New Year’s Eve’ took $13m in December 2011.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the follow-up to the original action ensemble piece has grossed just over $53m so far, with the publication estimating that it may finish on roughly $80m

This would mark the movie out as a flop, although not of epic proportions. The film has apparently taken less at this stage than the first 'Expendables' outing.

Yet in this summer of smash hits it will surely be a disappointment that it hasn't fought its way to the top like its muscle bursting stars.
