Doctor Who fans were stunned when the writer of the hit BBC show, Steven Moffat, revealed that there is a very strong possibility of a female Doctor taking control of the Tardis in the not-so-distant future...

Score for feminists everywhere!

Moffat, who was speaking at the Edinburgh International Television Festival ahead of the new series of Doctor Who, addressed rumours that a woman is set to take over the starring role after Matt Smith's departure:

"[Attitudes to that idea] have been changing... It is a part of Time Lord lore that it can happen - a Time Lord could potentially turn into a woman. The more often it's talked about, the more likely it is to happen someday."

We imagine that's all down to the fact that the revived Doctor Who, unlike the older episodes, has featured some very powerful and headstrong female characters. Think Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), Dr. Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and River Song (Alex Kingston) - not to mention all of the one-episode wonders, like Kylie Minogue and Michelle Ryan.

We wonder which actress would feel prepared to take on the likes of Daleks, Cybermen and (more terrifyingly) those amongst the Doctor Who fans who'd prefer a man to continue to play the part?

Well, we know who it WON'T be - Sherlock star Lara Pulver has already said that she won't play the first female Doctor:

"The fans aren't keen on [the idea]."

Scaredy-cat!

Doctor Who will return to BBC One in September and marks the beginning of the end for much-loved companions Amy and Rory - we wonder if they'll get the happy ending they deserve?
