Just as Katy Perry’s Fireworks were starting up, John Mayer didn’t stick around enough to watch them go off.
During the couple’s two months of casual dating this summer, the 27-year-old Perry “was starting to fall” for Mayer, according to People.
"They weren't serious, but she was really starting to fall for him," a source close to the Teenage Dream singer tells the magazine. "She wasn't seeing forever with him, but saw it lasting longer than it did.”
Perry, who finalized her divorce from her husband of a year Russell Brand in July, wasn’t the one who insinuated that she and Mayer head to splitsville.
"Katy likes the 'new' part of a relationship, when everything's exciting and you're getting to know the guy," the source explained. “So she wanted to continue experiencing that with John."
Even though the Wide Awake singer is “hurt” and “really upset” about the end of her summer romance with the Hollywood heart-breaking crooner, she and Mayer could still eventually have a friendship down the road.

"There isn't any emotional baggage with them," the source said. "They may go out again, even, just as friends."
Was Mayer sitting at home eating ice cream on the couch in his pajamas while crying with Bridget Jones’ Diary on the telly after they broke up? Of course not.
Mayer was spotted on Thursday night at the Soho House in West Hollywood – the same venue were the musical coupling was linked after they were spotted being “affectionate” with each other – drinking a cocktail in between “flirting and talking” with a couple of women.
But then again, we wouldn’t expect any less from the man who infamously broke the hearts of Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson.
