Avril Lavigne’s surprise engagement made jaws hit the ground, but now details of her whirlwind six-month courtship with Chad Kroeger have emerged.
According to their loved ones, the singer and frontman of Nickelback – both hailing from Canada – are an ideal for one another.
"They have the same values and really understand each other," a family source tells People. "They complement each other and are so happy."
The 37-year-old Kroeger first fell head over heals for 27-year-old Lavigne when the two rockers began to work on her fifth studio album earlier this year.
On Aug. 8, he presented the What The Hell singer a huge 14-carat engagement ring and asked for her hand in marriage – but the newly engaged couple isn’t in a hurry to tie the knot just yet.

"They haven't set a date. They're really enjoying this moment," a friend tells the magazine.
During a recent interview with HELLO! Canada, the Nickelback frontman and the pint-size blond opened up about their relationship.
"I knew I was falling for her," Kroeger said about collaborating with Lavigne. "It was incredibly powerful and something I'll never forget."
Lavigne, who divorced her first rocker husband Deryck Whibley, frontman for Sum 41 in 2011, confesses her fiancé’s sense of humor was what drew her to him.
"He makes me laugh every day," said Lavigne. "He takes care of me in every way and is extremely attentive."

Before her romance with Kroeger, she dated Brody Jenner, Kim Kardashian’s stepbrother, on and off since 2010.
