Last night New York Times journalist David Carr came under fire from Twi-hards after his line of questioning with Robert Pattinson veered sharply from 'Cosmopolis' on to his relationship problems with Kristen Stewart.
Rob, 26, found out last month that his girlfriend of four years has been cheating on him with her director Rupert Sanders, and is understandably shaken.
Fans were taken aback when an hour into the TimesTalks interview, Carr fired a question about his personal life after likening his relationship with Kristen to that of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana.
"So if you and Kristen have trouble it's like Charles and Di having trouble?" Carr asked. He was booed online and by the audience, who were unimpressed by the line of questioning.
The question itself had just stemmed from Rob's own statement that the US is in search of a Royal family of its own.
“I think it's because America really wants to have a royal family,” he had said.
Once Carr had asked his question, someone shouted 'next question', from the audience. While another was exasperated, "come on!". Just like his morning interview on Good Morning America, Rob turned to a diversion to process his thoughts, and rather than a mug of tea, it was a bottle of water.
One online viewer was unimpressed, as they wrote: “I was hoping that this was one guy that would have enough respect for Rob not to go there. Disappointed."
After taking a deep breath, the British heartthrob tried to answer the question, but words failed him, as he stumbled: "Well, uh, Charles..."
With Carr interjecting: “I wasn’t really going there, just so you know.” “No, I wouldn’t go that far,” Rob responded.
Rob was later pictured with his flies undone while on the red carpet in New York.
